In occasion of the exhibition 'Anthony Caro: The Inspiration of Architecture' at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, dancer Sophie Brassard gracefully moves amidst the complex wooden shapes of Child's Tower Room in this stunning video. At the Anthony Caro Centre we currently have a display of works on show, focussing on the radical development of Caro’s sculpture from the 1950s through to the late 1960s. This was a prolific period of making and experimentation, marked by a pivotal breakthrough in 1960 that saw Caro take sculpture off the plinth and begin constructing abstract works in found, brightly painted steel, and then in 1966 a new form of small scale sculpture, the table piece, informed by conversations with critic Michael Fried.

The exhibition includes rarely seen figurative early works in bronze, as well as some of Caro’s most renowned sculptures from the 1960s.

In 1959 Caro travelled to The United States of America on a trip funded by the Ford Foundation. During this career changing trip, he met the Colour Field painters Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Kenneth Noland, as well as the renowned abstract metal sculptor David Smith. In the following years Caro frequently returned to The United States, where he became close friends with many of the Colour Field painters, including Jules Olitski, with whom he taught at Bennington College, Vermont, from 1963-1965.

‘Caro is not a modeller of jewellery but rather a sculptor of pieces in gold’ Kosme de Barañano (2008)

Between 2005-2008 Caro worked with goldsmith Francisco Pacheco at Joyerias Grassy in Madrid to produce just under forty unique pieces of gold and silver jewellery.

These intimate, small scale sculptures underline Caro’s idea that all sculpture, in some way, has to do with the body.

The Art and Life of Sheila Girling came to a close earlier this week.

In 1977 Tony took part in the Emma Lake Workshop, Canada. Due to the secluded forest
location of the workshop, decided to use lighter pieces of steel that could be
transported by hand to site. In Emma Push Frame (1977-78) he experimented with making
drawings in space out of the linear steel, making it float and extend in three dimensions.
Emma Push Frame and other seminal works can be seen at Museum Würth as part of
‘Sculptors and Spaces: Anthony Caro and Eduardo Chillida’ until 27 October 2024.

Span (1966) on the terrace of the Hayward Gallery in 1969 as part of Anthony Caro’s solo exhibition. Featuring more than 40 works situated across the gallery this was Caro’s first retrospective and also marked the first solo presentation of a living British sculptor there.

In a letter to art critic Michael Fried, Caro wrote about the inspiration behind the work: ‘I heard a Mozart piano quartet which started with a jumble of notes more or less and he goes on from there and gives it organisation - it made me think you could start from anywhere’ (1967).
